    Built up steel beam

We have not examined adding rods ilo the channel. Whether we use rods or the channel, it appears that we will have enough room to slide the new member. We can check the rod idea tomorrow to see if we can get enough section out of it as it would certainly be easier to get the rods up there...

    Built up steel beam

All great info, everyone gets stars. The post tensioning is a really cool idea, but there most likely will not be a lot of access at one end. I would assume that some type of jack would be required to tension the cables. I still like the channel reinf to web idea the best. We will just need...

    Built up steel beam

We were on the same page as far as load removal (or de-stressing) and to get the c working correctly we'll have to look more into it. My "suggesting" is that we are proposing this method, the whole design method is a suggestion right now. The existing shear and web crippling has been checked...

    Built up steel beam

This one is tough due to the limited access to only one side. I like the idea of using the slots and will suggest that to the contractor. We can install the channel, and then add the additional weight, but it might not be feasible to relieve the current load before installing the channel. The...

    Built up steel beam

Has anyone ever nested a channel against a web on a wide flange beam to strengthen it? I have a project with limited access in which an existing W (top flange loaded) needs to be strengthened, but not by much. The plan is to take a 12" channel and weld it to the center of the web as to provide...

Insurance Company rejects CBO and Structural Engineering Findings

Do you have any pictures of the trusses themselves?

Insurance Company rejects CBO and Structural Engineering Findings

How many trusses is he calling to be removed or repaired out of how many total? Can you provide pictures of trusses that you believe are damaged which he is specifying to remain? I'm not sure how "bad faith" would apply. His report is his professional opinion just like the other professionals...

    rotten studs

If you eliminate the Tyvek, make sure you still comply with Code requirements for weather-resistant exterior wall barriers. What is the exterior finish? What state are you in? Scott www.dbssinc.com

    Old SBC copies

Thank you Ron. I would love to see the structural portions of the 1969 and 1988 codes.

    Old SBC copies

Do any of the more mature members have copies of older SBC versions? I'm looking for something pre-Andrew, preferably 1991. Thanks! SS

Insurance Company rejects CBO and Structural Engineering Findings

I often prepare reports and plans for several different insurance companies on fire losses in Central Florida. I find that some adjusters often under estimate the damage present at a loss. Fact of the matter is, they retain me to make that decision. I very rarely get concerns with my reports...

    Cracks in Mortar Joints

Thanks for the links. It would be helpful to note that the project is in Florida. I am specifically looking for some type of criteria of when the cracks are acceptable or not.

    Cracks in Mortar Joints

I am working with a contractor on a project which an unreinforced masonry structure was stabilized (sink hole). As always, the walls cracked. My plan is to provide reinforcing details for the significantly cracked areas but I am being asked to provide repairs for the minor "hair line" cracks...

    Solar Foundation Support

Most of the ground racks we have designed have been with concrete foundations due to owner request. When the overturning became large, we went with combined footings to connect adjacent columns. Typically, the actual panel supports limit the span of the beams or spacing of columns (we use...

Radius (Curved) Wood Stud Wall Bracing

Is there a beam that extends over the porch from the side of the bump out? If so, you could use that as a drag strut and pass the load to the cantilevered diaphragm over the porch. Else you could consider the LVL over the Master as a drag strut to transfer the load to the back wall and...

    holes in wood joists

It would be much easier to add a strap now, rather then pull down the drywall ceiling and repair a damaged joist later. I know with my luck, someone would drop the leg of a baby grand on one of those joists and I would be buying a new ceiling! Scott www.dbssinc.com

Re: Repair Works to Cracked Wall

I would look for some expansion provisions on the existing wall. From the picture that crack looks nearly vertical. It could be possible that it cracked, then tilted. Pay close attention to the footing and the connection to the footing as well. Good luck! Scott www.dbssinc.com
