    Pipe vs Flange MAWP

You are all making real good points. The reason why I brought this discussion up is that I was reviewing a relatively simple skid package consisting of several spools, flanges, valves etc with regard to ASME B31.3. One of the things I always check first is the MAWP of the piping, fittings...

    Operating pressure/MAWP/PSV setpoint

I should also be sharing a response I got from pleckner on the Cheresources forum for basically the same question. He provides valuable input: Quote start: First, you are correct in rejecting this design and your evaluation of the maximum operating pressure and PSV set pressure. They cannot be...

    Operating pressure/MAWP/PSV setpoint

I think we all agree that running the process so close to the set point of the PSV is bad in terms of engineering, economics (who would want to constantly waste their product through a PSV) and safety of operating personnel. Doug, it would be great if you could find that reference. When...

    Pipe vs Flange MAWP

Many times I have heard people make a statement such as "In a spool with pipe and flanges, the flange will always be the weakest link with regard to MAWP". I am wondering whether this statement is wrong or at least should be worded less general. From ASME B31.3 I can calculate what pressure a...

    Operating pressure/MAWP/PSV setpoint

Ashereng, you are right about the pushing. I should have mentioned that the separator is part of a skid. From the discussions I had with the design team I gathered that they want to have as high an operating pressure as possible, so they can move around the skid to different wells with possible...

    Operating pressure/MAWP/PSV setpoint

Actually, I should post what my stand on this application is: Normally a PSV is set equal to the MAWP of the equipment it protects, but the max normal operating pressure should never be in excess of 90% of the set pressure of the relief valve, otherwise excessive leaking can occur.

    Operating pressure/MAWP/PSV setpoint

Hello all I am looking at the following scenario. Gas from a well outlet enters a horizontal separator vessel. The vessel has an MAWP of 720 PSIg. A relief valve attached to the vessel has a set point of 720PSIg. The operating pressure is set at 720 PSIg as well. I am reviewing this...
