To run our EDM tool path software I need to give it a dxf file like this.
The bottom sketch is aligned with 0,0,0 and the middle and top sketches define the profile to be cut. Right now, I do this in SW but since I can't save a sketch as a DXF I have to create a solid and then save it...
Hello everyone,
This may not the the right forum but I’m looking for recommendations on a user-friendly drafting program that can handle 3D wireframe modeling, specifically for drawing and rotating models.
Our EDM software can import 2D closed profiles at two different Z elevations to create...
Hello,
I've a cylindrical bearing raceway for nine loose 0.2500" bearing balls that matches 7/32" radius gauge. My question is that whether that is correct and why? Is there a specification for designing such raceways?
Thank you
Pete
Interesting ideas, but I need to melt/fuse vinyl gaskets together (corners, additional sections). I can't find anyone out there that sells this stuff so I need to make our own... Infra red heater is a neat, clean idea... Pete
Hello,
I have an application where I need to heat a rotating disc to ~100C. The unit is hand held similar to a pizza cutter...
I appreciate any/all ideas

Initially we believed that the Rockwell tester was wrong so we had it calibrated and samples retested. The result were the same. We also tried scale A(60kg load) hardness test and results were not as skewed but there was a difference between the two sides. It seems that the more you indent...
Hello,
in our manufacturing process we use 19mm high by 3mm thick heat treated 1045 steel cutting knifes. These knifes have been harden to 36-38 HRc using bainitic hardening process. Recently we'd received a material batch where one side of the knife measured 35 HRc and the other 28 HRc, but...
I'm actually thinking of ripping the piston out of the cylinder and making my own carriages for each gantry head (carriage). Sorry no picture as this is all in concept/handsketch mode right now... The maximum stroke is 3m and I'm looking at 25mm bore cylinder to supply all the gantry carriages...
Hello Mike,
each carriage is ~3" wide, this is a long gantry with many small carriages that must accelerate extremely fast plus to plan is to run low voltage to achieve the required motion
Pete
Hello Mike,
unfortunately that won't work as all except for one carriage can be working on one side and then you'll need 3m long loop. It's the same reason why I went with the conductor rails idea for electrical power...
Thanks
Pete
Hello,
I have 20+ carriages on a single 3m gantry that require electrical and pneumatic power. I'll be using main PLC to control slave PLC on each carriage using industrial WIFI signal. I can get the power to each carriage using conductor rails (street car idea) but how can I get compressed...
Hello,
I need to find an equivalent steel to ASTM A514 grade B in Europe. Can anyone suggest an online conversion site or does anyone know what could the equivalent be?
Thanks
Pete
Hello,
I'm looking for an equation to calculate force generated by an electric solenoid.
I have an application where I need to generate 80 lb of force on an 3/8" rod that will never come out of the coil and I have no length limitation so the coil can be very long...
Thanks in advance
Pete
Hello,
I have an oscillating steel blade cutting soft plastic at 8000 oscillation/minute and 9 in/minute feed and I wish to calculate the blade temperature. Even simplified calculations would help... How should I go about it?
Thanks
Pete
Hello,
attached is a PDF I was able to find showing beaver plus other tools steels Atlas used to produce. The PDF also has a thermal treatment and tempering curves which may be of some help...
The end use is steel bending/punching application.. We produce cloth cutting dies and these tools...
Hello,
I'm looking for an alternative to 'beaver' tool steel made by Atlas Specialty Metals, who went bankrupt about 10 yrs ago.
So far, I have been able to find out its composition:
C 0.68
Mn 1.20
Si 1.00
Cr 8.25
V 1.00
Mo 1.40
Ni 1.50
I appreciate any and all help.
Pete
Hello,
could someone tell me the ANSI or ISO designations for these two steel compositions:
C Si Mn P S Cr
0.30 0.25 0.50 0.035 0.040 0.95
C Si Mn P S Cr Ni Pb
0.98 0.23 0.46 0.014 0.050 0.15 0.06 0.19
Thanks
Pete
... I was told that heating a preharden (42HRc) steel rule (1.5" high X 0.083 thick) for bending a bit is worst than heating it throughly (not melting). it has something to do with the fact that the steel becomes harder before it gets softer. now limited experimenting seems to support this...
We are cutting leather/fabric so 1045 is very good to us, but the problem is bending it to a tight/sharp corner. To do that we need to heat it which softens the material but destroys the microstructure.
So the next step is to atleast partial reintroduce the hardness back - go from 30 HRc to...
