    organization strategies

This may seem overly simplified but theres a lot to it. Do this one thing. Concern yourself with what your supervisor deems important.

Received a larger job offer, now what?

CivilTom - I have really enjoyed reading this post. Best I can tell, you are somewhere between being the scum of the earth and you will never ever work in this town again to a normal guy that wants to get paid what you are worth. Let us know how it works out for you. Best of luck.

Received a larger job offer, now what?

A question for anyone making the "you gave your word" to company #1 arugument. How long must the OP stay at his current poistion to satisfy your sense of "right", six months, 1 year, 5 years? Regards

Received a larger job offer, now what?

I agree with some of what has been posted so far. Do not go to your present employer and ask for a pay increase after one month. If you believe that job #2 is a better fit for you partly because there is a pay increase then make arrangements and switch jobs. Unless you have signed a contract...

    Job Interview

I see no problem bringing in some examples of your current work as long as it's not highly sensitive. I have a portofolio that has come in quite handy at interviews. The point is you are only briefly showing the interviewer the work. You don't make a copy and leave it with them.

Too many managers. Why are there so many managers? A year-end rant.

"Three different managers giving direction". That can be fixed easy enough. Speak to Management and voice your concern. There should be only ONE person giving direction or orders if you have a military background. Once you have everyone on the same sheet of music regarding that fact things...

    Military to Electronics engineering

Yes - the skill set you described will "hold sway" in an interview. The thing to note though is it will only be of a great benefit in "some" interviews. Outside of the DoD world and it's contractors no one will give most of the skills you described a second look. On the bright side, the intel...

Crush load and such for cardboard boxes

Gonna respond to my own message with a little more detail and some insight with regards to what I have found researching my problem. Some more background/detail. Our warehouse receives, stores, and ships many products to include those that my company is not the design authority. So my question...

Crush load and such for cardboard boxes

We are looking at requirements to calculate how high the logistics folks can stack a variety of boxes/pallets in the warehouse. Any Packaging engineers here or folks who could recommend an appropriate MIL-Spec or other documentation in the public domain? thanks in advance.

    Confused Engineer

My thoughts/answers to your questions. 1. Yes it is usual for companies/Managers to tell you they are gonna promote you and then not promote you. Don't feel bad. It's not you it goes on everywhere. Consider your Manager MAY get a bonus based on his budget/expeditures so keeping you on board and...

    Cold Cover Letters

Seee responses below Does anyone have expierience sending out cold resumes and cover letters to employers? YES By cold I mean sending them your stuff without a specific job posting. -Does this appear desperate? Probably -Does this put you at the mercy of the company, taking all your negotating...

    Salary Negotiation

You mention in your post "I think this is a good company". Why? Do you have firsthand knowledge of how they operate and treat their employees or do they have a really good PR staff? As far as a salary offer goes, there is no harm in countering. When you counter, you should be prepared to "build...

    The Profession

Interesting rant. I have had some of the same thoughts. After doing the job for twenty years I still have some of the same thoughts but have choosen to attack the problem a little differently than originally planned. Instead of trying to change the world, I have adjusted. I just choose not to...

Headhunter vs Sending Resumes, Pros/Cons, Recomendations

My experience. I had a headhunter find me a job. It worked out well. I paid the headhunter nothing, the fee was paid by the hiring company. I have had five real jobs since school. I got them as follows: Job 1 - Friend referred me Job 2 - Friend referred me Job 3 - Headhunter Job 4 -...

    FEA Plan

So far I'm taking a couple of things out of the responses and I'll attempt to paraphrase. 1. It's not just about FEA, it's about analysis in general with FEA being one tool. O.K. got it. So if I reworded the question to "Does anyone have experience writing an Engineering Analysis Plan or have...

    FEA Plan

Ahhh...maybe I wasn't clear in my original post. The intent is something similar to a Systems Engineering Plan found at this link and with the definition "The SEP is a "living" document that captures a program's current and evolving systems engineering strategy and its relationship with the...
