If that were the case, I would almost never charge hours for anything. Learning is my job. I find it confusing to think that if I'm learning I'm not working.
smart/lazy is the way most of my friends and colleagues are. The beauty of smart/lazy is that given interesting or challenging enough work they can become smart/motivated and get it done. Laziness is far easier to conquer than stupidity.
The responses you've given me are reassuring. I have come to an agreement (with myself) that I think is suitable.
As I said, I've spent the last 5 ski seasons spending anywhere from 20-30 days teaching skiing. I love it very much and am sure I could do it for 40-70 days and still love it...
