Hi Drgonzo,
put quite simply aluminium will always shrink no matter what you do, lowering heat input will minimise shrinkage but it can never be eliminated. The only thing you can do is balance weld to maintain uniformity of the shrinking, keep gaps to a minimum & allow for shrinkage...
Hi all, can anyone help determine the Impact testing requirements for the weld procedure for the following material and conditions as there is a difference of opinion between myself and the client inspector as to what is needed.
Vessel Class: AS1210 Class 1
Material: AS1548-7-460NL40 50mm Thick...
Area of a Hemi head = pi x Diameter squared Divided by 2
Area of 2:1 S.E head = 1.084 x Diameter Squared
Therefore Weight = Area x Thickness x Mass per cubic inch/foot/meter/centimeter or what ever you use.
hi chbake here are some basic formuli
2:1 S.E Head Volume, 3.1416xDiameter cubed Divided by 24
Hemi Head, 3.1416xDiameter cubed Divided by 12
These volumes are to the tangent point between the curved face and the straight flange.
hope this is helpful
Hi aclarke
Although I haven't used it for welding duplex grades of SS I have used it on a number of occasions for back purging of 304 & 316 grades of SS with great success. I would even go so far as to say that the finished appearance of the welds looks better than when using Argon purging.
Ghan all WPS's have essential variables including that for preheat, therfore if the welding was done outside of those parameters it must be considered to be unacceptable. This leaves you with 2 choices, cut out & remove the offending weldment or requalify as suggested earlier by Deanc.
