What is "shake down", "self limiting stress" and "rache

I will take a stab at it. feel free to correct me... no hard feeling :) I would like to study the right context rather than meditate over uncertainty... 1)what is shake down? To my understanding, shakedown is the process when the pipe material plastically deforms in a hot stage and then goes...

What is "shake down", "self limiting stress" and "rache

I am new to piping engineering and need some help from the experts in understanding some terminology/concepts(see below). 1)what is shake down? 2)Explain self limiting stresses and why primary loads are not self limiting? 3)what is ratcheting? Is it the same as cyclic fatigue?

Do I need to correct NPSHR in pump curve for different S.G.?

Thanks for the help Big Inch... Note to self: to refer http://www.pumps.org/content_detail.aspx?id=748 to confirm and address this Rumor of adjusting NPSHR value for different specific gravitys.......

Do I need to correct NPSHR in pump curve for different S.G.?

If my NPSHR curve in the pump curve gives me a value of 10 ft (based on water). Do I need to correct it for a lower specific gravity (S.G) if my pumping liquid has a S.G. of .63. Do I simply do the following (see below)===> NPSHR in the pump curve based on water (S.G.=1) is 10ft...

    Calculating NPSHA

Thanks fellas for all the help... I appreciate all your help and through experience will one day pass it forward. .... After reading your response, I would agree with katmar. I have a diesel reboiler stripper type that is boiling and flashing gasses off the top, going through a condenser and...

    Calculating NPSHA

On a stripper tower, does the vessel pressure equal to the vapor pressure of the process?

The pump cavitated, although here was excessive suction head available

Is pre-rotation the same thing as recirculation? If so, what is the recommended lower limit? Is it 70% of the flow at BEP or do you base it off the NSSS? Possible conclusion to my ordeal... I got an in between bearing pump which takes suction (2 impeller eyes) 16-20ft below the vessel. The...

The pump cavitated, although here was excessive suction head available

My pump is cavitating even though there is enough NPSHA. What are some possibilities for this anomaly?

What exactly does a vortex breaker do?

I understand that a vortex breaker inhibits the suction/draining liquid from forming a vortex but what exactly does a vortex do to a pump? In other words, what is the adverse affects of not having a vortex breaker? will the vortex travel along 20ft of 20" pipe configured with 3 90deg ells?
