    3/4" Dolomite

Jheidt - Well graded is prefered. Single size crushed stone just isn't as easy to walk/drive on as a well graded mix. lha - Your AASHTO #57 descirption is dead on with the ASTM 57 description I have. BigH - You are absolutely right!! At my company, we have standard boilerplate...

    3/4" Dolomite

Thank you lha! Thats what I was hoping for. The documentation they submitted doesn't contain a D50 value. It simply states "ASTM 57" and the source location in the description field.

    3/4" Dolomite

I specified the use of "3/4" dolomite" for final grading of a site. What I get from the contractor is "well graded dolomite" in accordance with ASTM's standard size #57 which, according to the contractor, is graded 3/4" stone. The average size of dolomite delivered is significantly smaller...

    Gravity wall design aides

I'm trying to find some design aides on designing gravity retaining walls. My text book, reference manuals and even my trusty Army Corp of Engineers manuals all stress analysing existing structures. I need to learn how to come up with a shape based on soil parameters. Particularly, the slope...

    Stainless Bolts

I've retrofitted lots of equipment in the past few years that was originally put together with carbon steel bolts. When I've made the switch to stainless, I always use everdur (Monel?) washers. Stainless bolt w/ stainless washer is impossible to remove once tightened without cutting.

    Rebar ties

I'm curious if anyone has any experience using rebar ties made of materials other than steel? I recently worked with a contractor to install a concrete foundation for a piece of equipment with magnetic field sensitivies. Instead of using steel, we used a fiberglass composite as reinforcement...

Monolithic Concrete Slabs - posible alternative

The 90ton piece of equipment is a step up transformer for a utility. Under normal operating conditions, it will not be subject to any lateral loads and will be constructed in an enclosure so wind loads will not be of any concern. Thank you Focht3!! I'll try using precast blocks of different...

    Transformer dielectric coolant fluid

My company has used FR3 recently and the only concern was that it is more viscous than normal mineral oil. Normally we use NYNAS 10GBX or Caltran 30-60, but we used the FR3 because of its lower flash point which resulted in lower insurance rates.

Monolithic Concrete Slabs - posible alternative

I have a design for a monolithic slab that will be 8'x18'x4' that is designed to support a 90 ton piece of equipment. This particular design requires a great deal of field prep and alot of effort in terms of coordination, materials and manpower. This problem is intensified by the fact that...

Prevent column failure due to torsion

I will be welding a W12 beam to an existing W14 x 202 column. This beam will be subjected to a vertical load and a horizontal load. The horizontal load from the beam will result in torsional buckling of the column. At this point, I am most likely going to beef up the column by either adding...
