Thank you both for the reply. I completely agree regarding the actual quality of the weld. Generally I find it better to ensure compliance with the code prior to getting into the engineering side. So often one has to use the codes as both shield and sword.

I have a WPS that is a F3/F4 welding procedure (E6010 Root/E7018 Fill and Cap). Understanding that filler metal is an essential variable; does that also mean that one can not use this procedure when welding a F3 root and an F3 Fill and Cap. I have been asked if it is ok to use this...
Basically, I am but welding 10" sch40 pipe, to make up a Section VIII-1 vessel. Our calculations were done to using type 3 joints and the design calls for spot x-ray.

The welds in question are type 3.
Regarding Extent of spot, Section VIII-1 calls for a minimum of one spot...
