ASME IX WPS Filler Metal Claridication

Good day,

I have a WPS that is a F3/F4 welding procedure (E6010 Root/E7018 Fill and Cap). Understanding that filler metal is an essential variable; does that also mean that one can not use this procedure when welding a F3 root and an F3 Fill and Cap. I have been asked if it is ok to use this procedure for a E8010 for the fill and cap.

More information is needed to comletely answer the question.

The primary limiting factor will be the E6010 maximum qualified thickness as based upon the relevant PQR(per ASME Section IX , QW 451.1). So if your WPS is qualified with a maximum 0.125" E6010, that is the limit for that electrode. Additionally, if your WPS specifies E6010 root, remainder E7018, you will be limited by that as well.


Getting past the code issues, with all things being equal, the welds's mechanical properties (toughness, significantly) for what would be presumed to be an all cellulosic weld will be inferior to that made with E6010/E8018.

Just because you may find it to be legal does not make it smart. 6010, 8010 rods all weld very nice; so what? The mechanical properties of a 7018 weld are head & shoulders above that of a xx10 weld. If your welder succeeds in talking you into using the 'easy' filler, make sure that your customer understands the difference. Pretty good bet that what Mr. Customer approved was the 6010 root/7018 fill & cap. The only reason it wasn't ALL 7018 is that rooting with it is almost impossible.
 
Thank you both for the reply. I completely agree regarding the actual quality of the weld. Generally I find it better to ensure compliance with the code prior to getting into the engineering side. So often one has to use the codes as both shield and sword.
 
It is not OK.
While a welder, similarly qualified with F3 root and F4 fill is qualiiied to weld completely with F3 electrode. The WPS is not so qualified.
