Client's idea or engineer's idea? Ethics Question

If the client creates functional requirements - how the designer fulfils them is up for grabs - the property issue is whether the contract specifies that all design work is owned by the client. Otherwise it is the designer and he can take out patents or modify the design for another client etc...

Setting myself up as a contractor in the UK, advice on invoices please

iwonafish, try looking at the PCG website for their guide to freelancing http://www.pcg.org.uk/cms/index.php it might answer some of your questions taxcafe also have some decent books on the benefits of limited vs sole trader http://www.taxcafebooks.co.uk/ whether you are sole trader or...

    not up to snuff.

RE, if the chartered system in Oz is the same or similar to the UK you don't have to get involved vetting the academic qualifications as the relevant institute should have done that. It will be whether the experience years count or not which you may well be able to attest to. Have a look at the...

    Flow in sloped drain line

Just a note for future reference - HR Wallingford is / was an organisation called Hydraulic Research based in Wallingford, England UK. Regards, HM No more things should be presumed to exist than are absolutely necessary - William of Occam

ethical question - warped trusses and the engineer's role

Ron, my point was that once the contractor has been told there might be a problem THEY are obligated to establish whether there is. If they don't have the expertise to assess the issue then they need to hire it in. How can someone with no contractual links be held liable - it's not equitable...

ethical question - warped trusses and the engineer's role

herewegothen, Please could you post the details of the case or provide a reference or link? I'd like to have a look to see what the reasoning behind the prosecution / disciplinary was. Many thanks, HM No more things should be presumed to exist than are absolutely necessary - William of Occam

ethical question - warped trusses and the engineer's role

My 2p... How can there be liability raising the fact that there may be an issue in using the trusses. Several possible outcomes: 1) The contractor does check them out and decides they can use them so how can you be held liable? 2) The contractor does not check them out and use them - again...

    Punch Press Lockout/ Tagout requirements

Hi Safetyranger - i'm not suggesting that anyone should be able to defeat a lock / tag out - just that your processes for management of them should allow more than one person to release the tag / lock but in accordance with a controlled process. RE Sources, you could try the following which are...

    Punch Press Lockout/ Tagout requirements

Hi Safetyranger, I'm not familiar with the 'basic rules' you refer to - surely your plant has a management process for tagouts? It seems unduly restrictive that the only person who can remove a tagout is the person placing it! The key aspects must be that the isolated eqpt is inoperable /...

    Professional Engineers and Dick Oliver

Going back to the original post the term Chartered Engineer is reserved in the UK so anybody who isn't can't use it. The term engineer on the other hand is fair game...planning engineer, sanitation engineer - you name it and someone will probably have used it! Regards all, HM No more things...

2D Lid Driven Cavity Flow simulation using MATLAB

Hey josephlm, I'm sorry i haven't used Matlab so some of the syntax didn't make sense to me. I have a few general observations that you might consider though. 1) Assuming the code all runs properly, have you solved using grids of greater resolution to check that you've optimised your mesh...

    Share Your Experience: Protecting Safety

    1) Everything that is designed or built has a probability of failure on demand...EVERYTHING. 2) Every procedural system can be got around / bent / ignored. 3) Something only stays "safe" as when it was designed when it is used / maintained as intended. 4) Something is "safe" when the risk of...

Probabilistic Risk Analysis - Is it a good opportunity?

Hey digital captive, Not sure whether PSA will give you experience relevant to work in operations - sometimes it can be a bit dry and divorced from reality. What it could give you is an understanding of the "big picture" and what dependencies there are between various systems, although the...

Probabilistic Risk Analysis - Is it a good opportunity?

IRStuff is kind of right, the nuclear industry has been forced down the route of showing risk of death as less than 1 in 1 million (that's deemed notionally acceptable by most governements) but the lower you can push the numbers the better it is received. The difficulty is that some numbers...

Probabilistic Risk Analysis - Is it a good opportunity?

Hi Digitalcaptive, Don't know much about what happens in the states but PRA / PSA in the UK is a MUCH sought after skill. Sure it's mostly theoretical and desk based but it is applicable in the nuclear, aerospace and chemical process industries. A quick Google search turned up a couple of...

    Puzzle

I haven't been on a swing for a long time but from memory (and me sitting in the office acting this out much to the amusement of the dog...) "working up" is achieved by the person standing and using reactions between the seat, the persons body and the chains holding the seat off the ground...

    HAZOP accreditation

cheute79 i agree that some familiarity with the plant / process / industry norms etc is valuable, however the converse of what you say is also true. If you have a chairperson with no HAZOP or HAZID experience but lots of subject knowledge then bias can enter the meeting and also the written...

    HAZOP accreditation

dcasto, I think that for TEAM members that is absolutely accurate - what is the point of having someone who has no knowledge participate in the HAZOP. For the FACILITATIORS of the HAZOP - ie the chairperson and the secretary surely all they need is experience of the HAZOP process itself (and...
