Generating Station Grounding - Isolating Building as Safety Measure?

You could propose some expensive step and touch potential measurements. How can you install anything on property you don't own. Paving the area would solve it till it got dug up.

Generating Station Grounding - Isolating Building as Safety Measure?

It so close it can not be isolated. IEE665 states you don't have to bond grids if the separation is more than 200M. But if you consider if it was a green field site you would not do anything beyond the power plant property line, which would be a grounded fence..

SOFT START ON GENERATOR USED AS TURNING GEAR

What waveform do get at 0 Hz, DC? How do they get starting torque? I have been trying to find a technical explanation of how this works.Do you have the field connected?

SOFT START ON GENERATOR USED AS TURNING GEAR

It seems that VFDs can start synscronous motors from standstill. Not sure about the special case of Generator Solid State Starting devices. Anyone doing it?

SOFT START ON GENERATOR USED AS TURNING GEAR

Basic theory about synchronous motors, they are not inherently self starting and usually start as induction motors using an embedded squirell cage in the rotor.

SOFT START ON GENERATOR USED AS TURNING GEAR

Read page 16. A sychronous motor can not start from standstill, so the turning or barring gear gets it rolling and the VFD matches the speed frequency and applies the field. Then it becomes a synchronous motor.

SOFT START ON GENERATOR USED AS TURNING GEAR

Thanks Scotty. The GE Literature is much better than for the ABB megatrol. It seems then the barring low revs are matched by the VFD to produce synchronous motor operation. I note the GE is water cooled and ABB aircooled.

SOFT START ON GENERATOR USED AS TURNING GEAR

To operate as a synchronous motor it needs to start as an induction motor or be brought up to near synch speed by some other means. The barring gear is hydraulic and could be used to bring it up to a very low speed, perhaps the VFD is able to bring the frequency down to that speed to allow the...

SOFT START ON GENERATOR USED AS TURNING GEAR

That is how I thought it worked, but Alstom literature states it starts and operates aa a soft start synchronous motor, so the field is applied.

SOFT START ON GENERATOR USED AS TURNING GEAR

Some vendors now offer a variable speed drive to use for acceleration and turning gear for Gas Turbines instead of starter motors.. Since synchronous motors are not inherently self starting, use an embedded squirrel cage, does any one have an explanation how this is applied to use the generator...

System Voltage Selection and IEC 61892-2

It is a recommendation not mandatory and everything was approved by the marine certification body designated. Look at separation, shielding and earthing. Too late to change now. Many old ships were like that. Nuclear reactors forced them into MV.

    Grid code Compliance Test

It is strange not to have this as mandatory requirement in your contract, it is standard. Check your contract carefully. Netherlands has a strict test procedure in their Grid Code. If you have to pay extra to get this done for interconnection it will be expensive.
