Dear all,
Does anyone know if the solution to a time history load (e.g. a water hammer) solved with modal superposition method (in e.g Caesar II) is sensitive to Twin modes in a similar way as a solution using the response spectra method for floor induced loads?

Mayby not any help for you, just a reflection from my use of the EN 10253-2.
What we usually do is to just order the fittings as type B. Then per definition they have the same strength to inner pressure as a straight pipe with the same material and dimension - end of story (we just calculate the...
Thanks for the reply Steve,
Today I discussed this issue with a more experienced engineer at my office. He also had never specified a SIF for butt welds between same size piping, regardless of the thickness being less than 0.237 in.
It feels awkward to just discard the criteria just like...
I know found in B31.1 V127.3 (C) a criteria that max mismatch < 1/16”. That allows me to use SIF=1 for the butt welds with t>0.237 in.
But the questions remains for piping with t<0.237 in.

Earlier I have mostly done ASME NC-3600 piping calculations and there the SIF for a butt weld is 1.
But now as I’m about to use B31.1 I noticed that the SIF for a butt weld could be as high as 1.9 depending on the mismatch. As I do not have any specification of the mismatch i feel forced to...
In ANSYS 13 Workbench the default vertical up axis is Y. Is there away to change it to Z? The reason for asking is that I use the num keys to rotate the model. And because I use Z as vertical up in my modelling the num keys don't work as intuitive as they would if Y was vertical up.
I.e. my...
If I get allowable forces and moments in three directions I would be satisfied. I’m talking about those times when I only get two bending moments and an axial force as allowable.
Thanks for the reply, Just back from a nice vacation.
No I do not have problems whith shear stresses. I guess thath the reply implies that if the piping can whithstand the shear stresses then the component can whithstand the corrosponding reactions. But as the component often is a black box I...
Hello,
Often I get in to discussion with suppliers of components about allowable component loads. The supplier often has the opinion that we piping engineers only produce bending moment and axial force at the interface to the component. Does anyone know the background to that?
I always ask...
Hi,
Is there away to import material data contained in .mac files into workbench 12?
The data is given with the MP command for example
MPTEMP,1,20
MPTEMP,2,50
MPTEMP,3,100
MPTEMP,4,150
MPDATA,DENS, mat1,1,7.85E-09
MPDATA,DENS, Mat1,2,7.85E-09
MPDATA,DENS, Mat1,3,7.85E-09
MPDATA,DENS, Mat1,4,7.85E-09
I have now studied some of the material you tipped me of. Although I have not obtained ASME B&PV Code Section VIII, Division 2 yet, I think this will be the appropriate way to go until the ASME B31.3 APPENDIX W is released (If I understand it correctly it is still a draft).
However in Div 2...
Thank You all for the replies,
Especially LSThills first reply (on the 25th) was very helpful and informative. However that reply has vanished from the tread, how come?
Best regards
Hello,
Is there any codes or documents that gives guidance how to evaluate high cycle fatigue in piping systems. What I’m after is a procedure that originates from the nominal beam stress range and through the use of stress indices gives the stress range to enter an applicable S-N curve.
