Thank you so much dbill74 for the wonderful answer. These are the type of answers I would like to see from individuals such as yourself with real world experience , which unfortunately are few and far between. This particular project I am working on is on a Hospital campus and fills up an...
davidbeach, good answer. Well, as far as I know when a new building is designed, the MEP engineering team is responsible for outside utilities 5 feet from the building. So anything beyond 5 feet is taken care of by civil engineer and the utility companies.
I am not sure if this is the right forum to ask this question but anyhow, this is my question. In the horizontal (building) architectural/MEP engineering world, who is responsible for identifying and relocating underground utilities that fall under the footprint of a new building. For example...
lukaiENG, I understand what you are saying on specific projects, but my question is regarding general situation. It is a good idea to have a civil engineer on a project especially if it is a ground up building. I Know MEP engineers have certain responsibilities and so do the civil engineers on...

I am working on design-replacement of two older heating water boilers with two new condensing boilers- 3,300 MBH each. One of my colleagues mentioned that during summer we can use the heating water out of these boilers and preheat domestic water via a heat exchanger. Does this have any energy...
I have a client who asked me to prepare the MEP construction document for an ice rink. I would like to know what the main design requirements are, especially on mechanical side- such as codes, standards, etc. Does the mechanical engineer usually design the ice rink itself or is a third party...
I hope this is the right forum to post this. I am trying to find projects for a small MEP engineering firm. So far I have found out that the most effective way is to schmooze up to architects since owner prefer dealing with one firm (mainly an architectural firm.) Obviously, finding the...
I am working on a project in Dallas, Texas. The owner wants to combine two existing suites in a shopping plaza and make them one large suite. I need to know what approach to take to combine the electric and gas meters.
I am working on bathrooms renovation at an existing assisted living building in Texas. We want to route the exhaust duct through the outside walls. The question is whether NBC and NFPA codes allow that. Are perimeter walls in such buildings fire rated? If they are, then can we penetrate them...

I have a specific question regarding control of SZ VAV systems. I know once the space temperature is satisfied, we need to ramp down the fan and modulate (close) the CHW vale to maintain DAT (specially for humidity control purposes,) but how exactly should the sequence of operation be for...
Does anyone know a website or have any tips on writing "introducing our company" emails to architects? How can I word the email to get them to at least give us a meeting?
What is the recommended temperature and RH for Libraries in K-12 schools.
ASHRAE HVAC Application handbook- 2011, chapter 7 says:
" To avoid growth of mold and mildew, a dew point above –1°C (33.8 F) and maximum of 55% rh are recommended.
Does this mean we can not have a temperature of 72 F...
I am designing a warehouse (ventilation, heating, etc.) in Dallas, Texas. Owner is a used car dealer and stores cars in this 20,000 sq.ft space. There is a prefabricated paint booth in the warehouse. There are 3 existing exhaust fans, 12000 cfm each.
What are the related codes, standards and...
To be honest I am not expecting to be a professional electrical engineer/designer overnight. I see chemical, electrical, architectural, and other types of engineers who are very familiar with HVAC engineering and design. There are numerous number of crash courses and books in HVAC, from...
I am a mechanical engineer and live in Dallas, Texas area. I am looking for a electrical system training course that is offered for non electrical engineers, mainly focuses on design of electrical distribution systems in industrial and commercial buildings, including service to all types of...
I am the engineer of record and project manager for MEP renovation at a school. We are in CA phase right now. Owner was supposed to have third party commissioning done on this project but I believe they are not going to hire a commissioning team and save the money. My question is, how...
I apologize for not being more specific. I am in the MEP field. I like to have a good understating of commercial buildings' electrical systems. The link to the course I referred to in my first post is:

I hope it was okay...
