    I think some of the trouble you are having is that software really doesn't model flexible diphrams correctly, (or atleast not how it would be done traditionaly with paper and pencil, ie. "Semi-Rigid" is not flexible in any software package). And as always there is no such thing as a turly rigid...

    Could you place the equipment on a grid of steel beams on top of the slab? Elminates a lot of the trouble of modifcations.

    WF BEAM SUPPORTED BY WOOD HEADER

    My understanding is that steel supported on wood is allowed (but frowned upon) if you account for long term creep and defletions of the wood support. Masonry supported on wood is generally not allowed, but there are certain exceptions described in the IBC.
