Hi, I looked into EN12952 but it doesn't specify that it supersedes NF E 32-101, etc .
Thanks to the boys at IHS I've managed to locate a copy and it'll be here next week!
Many thanks for your comments.
Adam.

We have a boiler designed to a french boiler code:
Code de construction des générateurs de vapeur
We're particularly interested in part 103:
NFE 32-103 Code de construction des générateurs de vapeur - Partie 3 : Calcul de résistance des éléments soumis à une pression intérieure
as this is...
Good luck getting a seal. Slight variations in surface profile will require a high bolt load to seal up and this should form the basis for your calculations. Pressure sealing metal to metal joints usually use a softer metal ring with a small contact area so you don't need a massive contact...
Yes, overpressurising a component containing a crack can blunt the crack tip and provide a small zone of compression at that region thus retarding further growth. The pressure required to do this would depend on crack location and geometry.
The PED primarily regards placing equipment onto...
I remember reading some work carried out by the British Gas research bods in Newcastle UK about 15 years ago. They were looking at the effects of hydrotesting underground piping with small, deep pits. One of the results was that piping undergoing hydrotesting failed at a subsequently lower...
The design pressure of vessels containing cryogenic or liquified gases will be based upon the vapour pressure at the maximum expected in service temperature. You would reach 265psig at at somewhere between 40 and 45degC. That's the "why"

Before you go about killing someone ask yourself some questions:
(1) Are you sure this is the only crack in your tank?
(2) Is the length actually the total length? There may be a very large crack of which only a small part has become through wall.
(3) Is the crack at such a length that...
Flat, thin plates generate high membrane stresses under pressure which will cause them to deform as IFRs states, the net effect of this is that the edge of the plate will be raised upward.

I think your 'consultant' should do gen up on some basic electics first.
Any earth will be held at 'ground' potential which is 0 Volts so any charge developing anywhere near a conductor that was earthed would immediately cause a current to flow and the voltage to drop.
Vessels and tanks are...
So is this chlorine dissolved in water (aka hydrochloric acid)?? Rubber-lined/brick lined kit's often used in processing strong aqueous acids.
Surely the designer would specify the code so I would ask him. If you get a blank stare then I would dig a bit deeper but API-620 or 650's probably a...
Hi coreman73,
IMHO, the site's useful for fellow engineers to obtain opinions from other engineers, to get maybe a bit of guidance on where they can get help or look more broadly at a problem, or even information on career development, or just some moral support.
If you look on the pressure...
You need to haul these parts off to a qualified professional METALLURGICAL failure analyst if you want better answers. This is obligatory if there are even remote safety implications to a repeat failure.
As I read through some of the posts I grew increasingly annoyed by the uninformed...
If the material remains below yield then it will behave elastically unless you are in the creep range. Beware that some components can potentially have residual stresses as high as yield if they are welded (see BS7910 appendix Q for example)

You have to recover the cost of the original purchase of the software & hardware plus the ongoing licencing costs, so add up how many jobs you expect to do in a year and divide by the number of hours in the year you are having them working.
Add a percentage and bob's your builder... Or anyway...
How are you storing chlorine at 3psi? Is it just gas? It has a vapour pressure of 74psi at 'rooom' temperature. If you put liquid cholorine into your tank at 3psi it would boil off and turn into a gas (and cool your tank down to about -30C at the same time).

Maybe it's time to look for another job. If you are keen and it's what you want to do then someone'll take you on. You might have to take a drop in salary down to something like graduate level pay as the company pays for your training and development but if you have the 'right stuff' you'll...
Wherever conditions are right for O2 pitting it'll occur but you need to have oxygen.. Once the oxygen is used up the pitting won't occur anymore. So the heat from the flue gas in the economiser will just heat it up enough to initiate pitting. If you had lots and lots of oxygen then it'd...
Normally, evidence of thread rolling is indicated by local subsurface deformation of the microstructure, whereas, machined threads will reveal a cut surface with a very minor amount of subsurface deformation.
Looks like I was beaten to it by metengr
