What Code would 3 psi Chorine Tank fall under? 1

Any idea what code would an vertical, above ground, 10' dia x 30' tall chrorine tank under 3 psi be designed & inspected to?

In that pressure range, a tank could be built to API-620 or to ASME Code, Section VIII. API-620 would be easier to use for a flat-bottom cone roof tank, and ASME easier for a tank with F&D heads. If the product is refrigerated or the tank is exotic metals, you'd need to make sure it would still fall under the scope of API-620 before using.
 
I am curious about your process...

Why are you storing chlorine under such low pressure in an large expensive tank ?

Why not compress it and store it in a smaller, less expensive vessel ?


 
This is out for bid and speced by Client.

No exotic metals, just 1/2" thk carbon plate with flate top and flat bottom reinforced top & bottom wiht I-beams.

All CJP welds except for flat bottom to shell wall.

Question: under API 620, would need RT but would hydro be required? That would be ALOT of H2O!

The flat top and bottom sounds like a UL tank, but they aren't normally used for other purposes like this.
 
How are you storing chlorine at 3psi? Is it just gas? It has a vapour pressure of 74psi at 'rooom' temperature. If you put liquid cholorine into your tank at 3psi it would boil off and turn into a gas (and cool your tank down to about -30C at the same time).

Are you an engineer ? More importantly; do you work for an MBA ?

Has there been any HAZOP of this new process installation been done ?

Will we be reading about your engineering triumphs and subsequent loss of life on this website ?


In what country will this new tank be located ?

From what I understand the chlorine is being processed thru 3 separate tanks, with the first one being brick lined.

I am a welding & fabrication inspector, not an engineer, just wanting some feedback and information on codes dealing with storage tanks.

Thank you for your concern, I personally am not designing the vessel.
 
So is this chlorine dissolved in water (aka hydrochloric acid)?? Rubber-lined/brick lined kit's often used in processing strong aqueous acids.

Surely the designer would specify the code so I would ask him. If you get a blank stare then I would dig a bit deeper but API-620 or 650's probably a good place to start in terms of fabrication standards and inspection requirements.
