    HSS Col-Beams from four sides

hawkaz, thanks. Use of WTs seems like a good idea, and cheaper too. nutte: Its sort of complicated, I have moment connection (wind frame) from one side with 8k-ft moment, so not a lot. Rest are shear connections. Where would I find the ductility ratio info in the steel book?

    HSS Col-Beams from four sides

I want to verify the changes I want to make to this attached obsolete detail. I have a HSS col with WF beams coming in from four sides. I can get a thru plate for connection from two sides but I am not sure about the other two sides. Could I use welded plates (as marked up) which are not thru...

Concrete mix for exposed exterior slab on grade

VTEIT: Yes its broom finish. Now that you mention it, 5.5% does seem high for interior, should be more in the range of 3% I think. But 5.5% should be good for exterior, right?

Concrete mix for exposed exterior slab on grade

Party pavilion, open 4 sides, wood trusses on columns at roof. Location in IL (frost and snow). My question is about my slab on grade mix design. I have the following: Min f'c = 3000 psi. Min cement. Material = 520 lb/cubic yd. Max W/C = 0.40 Slump = 4" + - 1" Air content = 5.5% + - 1 This is...

Concrete mix for exposed exterior slab on grade:

Sorry wrong forum. I'll be re-posting this in the "other topics" forum. Delete this one if you like.

Column footing as a trench footing

Hokie, So I guess in the attached sketch, I can replace the pier and footing with one pour then?http://files.engineering.com/getfile.aspx?folder=e6146235-844d-4560-b5fc-58bf17f723c5&file=trench_col_ftg.pdf

Column footing as a trench footing

Has anyone ever done a column footing in form of a trench footing rather then a formed one? The question has come up on a project where due to time constraints the contractor wants to do trench footings at walls. That should be OK, I have done that before. But now they are wondering if they can...

    Stoop detail question

Thanks. I'll use smooth dowels between the sidwalk and the stoop. Bridgebuster, I see your stoop ball of a "game" and raise you softball, a game invented in Chicago.

    Green vs Black book

Do the new building codes, like IBC 06/09 require the design per LRFD method? I haven’t done a lot of steel design in the last three years as I was doing concrete work full time so I am out of touch with the changes. Am I required to do a beam design per ASD and LRFD of the black book? I am...

Net uplift on metal deck on bar joists

frv, my bearing walls are precast and masonry, so uplift on the footings is not an issue. SteelPE, I am in 90 mph zone (IL). Thanks for the input.

Net uplift on metal deck on bar joists

What are the major effects of net uplift on a roof deck? I know that I have to show the net uplift on the documents for the joist mnfr to design for, which will end up in extra bridging lines. But what other major issues should I be concerned about? I believe that the 22 ga metal deck connection...

    Stoop detail question

I need some insight on a stoop detail at a door entry. Please see the attached. My question: Is it a good idea to tie the sidewalk into the stoop? FYI- This is IL so frost heave is an issue.

Joists bearing on both sides of 8" cmu wall.

Why not use a 10" bond beam at the top and use the bearing that you need. If the top of the wall is going to be above the ceiling no one will ever see the change in thickness.

    Most common fÆm (masonry)

PUEng, Thanks for the post. I think that explains the widely different opinions by some very experienced folks on the topic (very confusing to novices like me). I guess it would be a good idea to call 2 or 3 local suppliers and ask for their opinion as their is no universal number that can be...

JD2, thanks for the load info. My joist is between 15-16 ft span so that info is exactly what I was looking for. As far as form deck is concerned, the contractor sent over a pic this morning and indeed there is a form deck. See...

Is the 75 year SJI manual available online? I googled it and looks like you have to pay to get it.
