I need some insight on a stoop detail at a door entry. Please see the attached. My question: Is it a good idea to tie the sidewalk into the stoop?

FYI- This is IL so frost heave is an issue.

Joe:

If the stoop is new construction, rather than tie it to the sidewalk with resteel, I would undercut the sidewalk slightly, pour the stoop under the sidewalk, and allow the connection to float laterally with no resteel into the slab. The sidewalk will still be supported vertically and be able to slip slightly laterally if it wants.

You could possibly use greased bars so that the stoop and sidewalk do not move vertically relative to each other but the side walk can move laterally however I don't think we usually tie the sidewalk into the stoop.hmmm.

Isolate the sidewalk. Allow for 3/4" vertical movement plus lateral movement. The 3/4" keeps you within ADA requirements (if that's an issue, and it might be if this is multi-family).

Both Mike and RF are correct, in my ever so humble ([lol]) opinion!

Thanks. I'll use smooth dowels between the sidwalk and the stoop.

Bridgebuster, I see your stoop ball of a "game" and raise you softball, a game invented in Chicago.
