I have come across a non-contact surface roughness measuring device called “Laser Check” being sold by Tropel. The repeatability of the results looks good, but I am not sure about the accuracy of the results. I would be using this kind of instrument to compare surface finishes with what a customer wants. Does anyone have any experience with this or other non-contact surface roughness measuring devices?

Many thanks

We have bought this device to test rougher surfaces than the mirror surfaces we usually test (optics manufacturing lab in gov't). The correlation between interferometric and LaserCheck data looks pretty good when we did a quick check. We plan to do more careful cross calibration for the smoother ranges of the LaserCheck that overlap with the interferometric method (cf ADE PhaseShift's "MicroXAM" machine that we have, similar to Zygo's NewView, etc.)
