In 1170.0
table c1 under roof support elements it specifies a element as "roof elements that support brittle claddings".
I cant find in the standard what they consider as brittle. Seems like a broad term. Can anyone help?

I'm not familiar with 1170, is that Australian? Based on the verbiage you posted however I would venture to guess that it's related to deflection and by brittle they are meaning finishes such as stucco or plaster. Take a look at 2018 IBC Chapter 16 Deflection table (Section 1604) 2018 IBC

Some stucco finishes however have an ICC report that allows for L/240 in lieu of tighter deflections.

I assume you refer to Australian Standard AS 1170.0. This is an international forum, so best to be as specific as possible to get better responses.

When I used to practice in AU, "brittle claddings" was typically masonry, like a parapet brick wall or maybe brick chimney etc.
