I am researching a low cost design for a spur gear this is currently made from 17-4PH H1150. I see comments that this material should not be used in "very low" temperatures. Where can I find material properties / operating temperatures for 17/4PH? Thanks!

Carpenter has data on this grade at cryogenic temperatures.

Ed, small pie shaped spur gear about 3" pitch diamter.

Must meet ASTMB117 salt foy (I know - overkill) and get to about RC30.

looking at it all Ed - currently it is machined in the H1150 state.

Could the part be fineblanked? If so you might be able to use a duplex stainless like LDX2101 or even 2205. You would have great corrosion resistance and no heat treatment.

RCWAHOO,

I did a similar sounding part (1/4 sector spur gear) for an automotive actuator. We machined the first few proof of concept pieces out of billet, but migrated to powdered metal for the prototypes and then production. We ended up with a custom tailored stainless alloy that was similar to 440B, which is really easy to do in PM. I only had a -40C low temp limit though.

These folks may be able to help you with alloying information in PM:

These are some PM guys that I have worked with

And of course you can contact the tech guys at Crucible, they make a lot of powder for tool steels and stainless.

Though I still like the idea of fineblanking.

Ed,

Will LDX2101 and/or 2205 achieve 30 HRC in sheet/strip form? I don't know how high these duplex grades get...

Well, they would be close. Another option might be XM-11 cold rolled to 1/4 hard.
What I was really counting on was the cold working of the teeth in blanking.
You may be able to get a duplex with a temper roll pass on it also. I haven't tried to yet.
