Why are there no standards? There are no rules that say there has to be a standard. Every tire manufacturer is allowed to do what they want.
Does it makes sense to develop a standard and comply with it? Yes. Just like it makes sense for bolts and nuts to be standardized. The real advantage is for the consumer and the vehicle manufacturers. They can have multiple sources.
Does it make sense to NOT have a standard? Only if you are the manufacturer - exclusivity. Although, it doesn't take very long for others to enter the fray if there is enough business.
