I need a 180Hz AC supply two phase or i would take three. 20kVA 220v ac output. I have been looking at motor generator sets. However the generator typically is 400hz. 180 is hard to find. Anyone tried running a 400hz generator slow enough to output 180Hz by using a VFD to drice the motor part, or by gearing down the motor output shaft? If so is there a reduction in efficiency/output?

180 Hz motor generators were once common to drive cement vibrators. However much smaller. About 1 KVA or 2 KVA.
Driven by a small Brigs&Stratton engine.
To output 180 Hz from a 400 Hz generator you would have to use 180/400 = 45% of rated voltage. Otherwise you would run into V/Hz ratio issues and saturation.

As Bill sez V/Hz problems. A 60Hz generator might get up to 180Hz.

It would probably be better to use electronics to get there. Use a VFD. That would be way more findable and would allow you to use any old electricity you find laying around.

What is your load? That may make a difference to possible solutions.
