I am working on a work station that I feel I am pushing to the limit. But I also like to work with 2 monitors and was wondering if I add a second monitor will this have any affect on the computer preformace. The video card I have does support 2 monitors.

Thanks

It may affect your performance somewhat. Of course, that should be balanced by the increased productivity of having two monitors. The best thing would probably be to just go ahead and try it. As long as you can at least try it out without having to buy another monitor or any other hardware all you stand to lose is the time it takes to set it up and get the advanced dual-monitor settings tweaked for your preferences. I personally love the dual setup, and I really miss it at home.

I set up dual monitors at home and at work! :) I can imagine sitting down at a desk for serious work and not having the second monitor, except when I sit at someone else's desk (in which case I find myself looking for the second monitor sometimes lol).

There's no performance hit that I am aware of, although with a dual-monitor setup you'll be tempted to run lots of things at the same time, which could slow you down. Sometimes the dual-monitor setup can be a little buggy; you may have to get the IT department involved if it doesn't work exactly as expected.

Get a multi-core chip, too, and you'll have a huge mess of stuff on your screen at the same time (and in RAM).

I got a 21" widescreen-format monitor and I love it. Dual screens are probably still cheaper/square-inch, but I just saw some Dell prices that impressed me on some huge stuff. (Still love my Gateway. ..besides, it looks cool.)

Reason trumps all. And awe transcends reason.

We ran 2 monitors on pro E then when we switched over to solid works our video car was good enough to run two monitors but as soon as you brought two screens of solid works up (or bridged one over both) it would just white screen. So vid card quality does make a difference.

There IS a performance hit, a pretty sizable one too... but it is only when you try and use hardware accelerated graphics (eg SolidWorks, Adobe Reader 8, etc) on both panels. As long as you keep the office stuff on one and SW on the other you will be fine.
