Section 506.1 states "Seismic provisions of this chapter shall only apply to buildings built after January 1, 2003." In the state of NY, the applicable building code prior to January 1, 2003, was the State Uniform Fire Prevention and Building Code (the Uniform Code). The Uniform Code does not have any requirements for seismic design. Does this imply that when repairing an existing building that was built PRIOR to January 1, 2003, there are no seismic design requirements?

Check New York State Department of State website. This provision was deleted in the amended version of the 2010 New York State Building code.

This could be a perfect example of a politically and economically driven code change to the detriment of the public.

Glad to see that it was deleted. When the New Madrid goes, it will be felt in NY.

Thanks for your help. I went on the NY DOS website and was able to find the Amended version of the code.
