First off, thatns for all the excellent advice on other threads. (You know who you are!)

We are using a transformer in our installation to go 480Delta:208Y/120 to feed office loads and receptacles. My question is what use do I have for the 208Y power? can I run (some) 240V single phase loads by tapping leg to leg, or is the 208Y basically useless in this case?

480Delta:208Y/120 volts is a very commom installation. You generally use it for your 120 volt requirements. No you can not get 240 volts. You must use 208 volt equipment in this installation. You need to spec the office equipment to use 208 volts. Most pieces of equipment will say on the name plate if it can be used with 208 volts.

right, I know some (but not all) equipment designed for 240 also runs on 208. but it is wired leg-to-leg in single phase like I described, right?

methinks its easier to balance the loads if i keep it strictly 120V!

Well that isn't the only point!? If the building has/needs A/C, or electric heat, or has an elevator, or electric water heater then you must make use of the higher voltage.

yes, fortunately, we have none of those items!

Sometimes they do it on commercial buildings just because the transformer is smaller and cheaper, plus it makes the space more flexible for the next tennant.
