Anyone know the physical size difference between a 289 and 351W? Any idea if the engine mounts are close enough so a 351W can be swapped? Must I use an adaptor plate between a 351W and a c4 transmission? Thanks.
I am not a Ford specialist, but as far as I know all Windsors share most external dimensions. The variable dimension is deck height with longer stroke engines having a taller block or greater distance from the crank centre line axis to the deck of the block.
Cleavland blocks are completely different to Windsor blocks, even if they have the same stroke.

Right-o Pat... the 289 has an 8.2" deck height and the Windsor is 9.5". As you can imagine raising the cylinder heads up and out creates a much larger engine so hood clearance and exhaust to shock tower clearance are two issues to be concerned with.
This is right guys. The other problem with swapping windsor blocks is that pre Nov 1965 289 blocks have a 5 bolt bell housing pattern and this will not bolt up to a C4 transmission. Post '65 blocks have 6 bolt bell housings for all 289, 302 and 351. 351 cleveland blocks also use the same engine mount locations and 6 bolt bell housing dimensions. C4 transmissions have large and small diameter bell housings. The bolt patterns are the same but the drive plates also change diameter according to the bell housing.
And in addition to the above the 351W is around 50lbs heavier. A fair chunk of weight.
Depending where in the world you are buying a 347ci kit would be a better option and allow you to retain most of what you already have. Designed for putting in a 302 I can't see any reason it won't go in a 289. The 289 is supposed to have bores that don't extend down into the crankcase as far as a 302, but with the 5.4" rod kit that still places the piston .110" higher in the bore at BDC anyway.
The kit's reasnoably priced if you're in the states, but costly outside.
The Cleveland shares ALL the critical dims with the later Windsors (mounts & B/housing), being Windsor derived. It has a 9.2" deck height and a cast extension on the front.
