It seems to me that da Vinci gets a bit too much credit. "Invention" isn't the act of thinking of something, it's the act of making it workable. The Star Trek writers thought of warp drive and phasers and photon torpedoes; that doesn't mean they invented those things. I can sit here and sketch out levitating fly saucers all day, but that just doesn't count for much.

Thanks for your post. The simulation in SolidWorks appears to show that this particular idea from Leonardo Da Vinci was workable. Not sure if you looked at the simulation, but you may want to have a look at it and comment. Of course, there could be errors in the simulation. And perhaps the cart was not practical enough to be used day to day. But am still impressed how Da Vinci could visualize these mechanisms without CAD.

This cart was on a show and it had programmable steering, if I remember correctly.

Don't knock the star trek writers, after all half our society is based off of cool gadgets they thought up. My favorite three are the 3.5in floppy disk, the flip open cell phone and the tablet computers
