So we are getting requests for certain types of materials to be used for 3D printing purposes. These are RAD as well as flammable or combustible powders/materials. My question is what standards or recommendations that you may be utilizing when developing fire engineering processes for these types of products.

I'm assuming this is additive manufacturing. You're best start is with NFPA 654 and pre-screening the powders. If combustible metals are being employed, you'll need to review NFPA 499 for hazardous location designations and NFPA 484.

I have no idea of what RAD is so I can't help with you with that.

First reach out to the insurance carrier engineering department for guidance. Also look at FM Data Sheet 7-76 PREVENTION AND MITIGATION OF COMBUSTIBLE DUST EXPLOSION AND FIRE the Data Sheet is free from Factory Mutual as well as the NFPA document noted above. Dust testing of the material is the first step in the process. I would also contact an expert in dust to provide details on what is needed. Dust is hard to ignite BUT when all the conditions, such as particle size, dust concentration, humidity, amount of dust, etc come together it goes bad real fast. The dust at the highest point in the operation is typically the most dangerous, proceed with caution.
