Three dimensional cutting for tubes (by lasers) and by plasma cutting for structural steel is fairly common now. See as example.

But does anyone know if there is such a thing as 3D waterJet cutting ? I have an application with intricate features to be cut on an oval tube and have to try to avoid localized heating that may effect the shape.

I haven't seen anything in a waterjet like a Python-type machine, but I know robots using waterjet heads for making 3D cuts is quite common.

I've had tubes cut with waterjet before. We had to rig up some fixtures and make a tube insert so the jet didn't cut all of the way through the other side. Admittedly the patterns that I needed were very simple.

A good tube laser shop will be able to cut width detail less than 1/2 material thickness.

It is better to have enough ideas for some of them to be wrong, than to be always right by having no ideas at all.

I have seen a six axis waterjet but there was no tube chuck. company wass Superior Alloy Technology located in montreal quebec. web site supalloy.com i believe
