Hi,

I'd like to learn more about 3Dexperience but unfortunately I do not have much support from my organization.
Let me know please, what difference makes for a Catia designer the use in his daily CAD tasks of:

1) Catia enhanced with the 3Dexperience platform
2) Catia without the 3Dexperience

I have to tell you that I am not involved in complex engineering stuff, so my question is strict related to CAD design
I need to know if my struggle to achieve this tool is worth it......

Thanks you!

Hi, the main difference between Catia V5 and Catia 3D Experience is the fact that V5 is offline (you work on your local files) and 3DX is connected so everything you do is stored on the cloud. The search is then easier (if you fulfill the attributes of course) and you can still organise your files in an "explorer style" with folders on workspaces.

The 3D experience version is also more recent so updated with a few things regarding the pure design workflow (improvement in user experience in many things) and as you're connected to a PLM system, your files have a lifecycle and you can make them visible or not by other user depending on your security context.
There are 4 levels : Organisation, Collaborative space, role and lifecycle.
The Company is the main container. If you (as a user) are not assigned to an organisation, you cant see its content at all.
The collaborative space is a sub-container. Same as the organisation, if you are not assigned to a collab space you will probably not see its content except some exceptions depending on your role (if you belong to the same organisation as the collab space does).
Your role is associated to the collab space and will allow you to read/write content and maybe administrate some content as well It will also allow you to change or not the lifecycle of the objects belonging to the collab space.
The lifecycle is on the objects and based on your role, you'll be able to change it or not and modify or not the object.

You can also manage your V5 files with 3DX. It's not as integrated as Catia V6 inside 3DX but it works fine. The main goal is to securise your data. It will also give easier access (web viewer) to your data among the company based on the security context already explained.

Arnaud_G,

Great reply, thanks a lot!
Your explanation is exactly what I needed: concise and clear.

Short comment: As far as I’m concerned, 3DExperience is similar with a different product lifecycle management: Teamcenter Engineering, from Siemens.
I use this PLM at my current job.
I use at my current job a different product lifecycle management: Teamcenter Engineering, from Siemens.
The Catia icon on my desktop shows (under properties) its designation: Teamcenter_Integration_for_CATIAV5
Should I understand that 3DExperience does almost everything that Siemens Teamcenter do?

Regards,

They are very similar I think for a lot of things. I don't know teamcenter enough to tell you what could be the differences. However something I'm sure of : if you can have a PLM from the same company as the CAD system, it's better (true for Catia or Solidworks + 3DX or Teamcenter + NX or Solid Edge for instance, or again Inventor with Vault professional).
If the two products are from the same editor, you're more likely to have a better compatibility on advanced CAD features (family of parts or assemblies for instance, or specific modules like tubing or FEA).

Teamcenter doesn't have a compass for start, like 3DExperience has:

And, also there are no CAD tools enhancements in Teamcenter, like 3DExperience provide for Catia:

It looks so far that I could survive without 3DExperience, but it would be nice to be achieved........[dazed]

Sorry for such a late answer but there are many other things which we can talk about 3DX (by the way, you have on-premise installation and on-cloud, private or public). Also for V5 you can have collaboration thru a PLM/PDM system (see ENOVIA VPM/3DCOM) so, no files on your PC.

You can even collaborate through a virtual desktop so again no files on your PC...for both V5 and V6...

Of course, you can survive without 3DX but the trend is clear, many companies will switch to 3DX since big OEMs will do it sooner or later. And I wouldn't be surprised when DS will announce officially stopping the development of V5...I'm sure it will be like V4 case.

There are many things to talk about 3DX, a lot of demos on YouTube, on DS website, LinkedIn...even FB...sorry, but I'm not able to write more, I have my shoulder fractured and using the keyboard is not so convenient now [bigsmile]

Regards
Fernando
