4" DIA & 5" DIA FENCE POSTS GRADE 50 YIELD

I AM ESTIMATING A PROJECT WITH A SECURITY FENCE THAT CALLS OUT THE POSTS TO BE 4.5" DIA AND 5" DIA x 3/8" WALL THICKNESS AND GRADE 50 YIELD STEEL. THE SPEC SAYS USE HDGALV PIPE CONFORMING TO ASTM F1043. I CAN'T FIND A STEEL PIPE PRODUCT THAT MEETS ALL THESE CRITERIA. I CAN FIND X-STRONG 5" PIPE THAT IS 3/8" THICK BUT IT IS GRADE A53 WHICH I THINK IS LESS THAN 50KSI. PLEAE HELP IF ANYONE KNOWS THE AVAILABILTY OF WHAT IS SPECIFIED.

Pipe is typically A53, as you note, which has a Fy of 35 ksi. I've never come across F1043.

I don't have the black book with me (going from a green book), but it looks like A618 has a 50 ksi yield (available in mill quantities only).

ASTM F1043 appears to specify the protective coating and not the steel itself.

Grade 50 probably means ASTM A500, Grade C (50 ksi yield stress).

So, under ASTM A500 this would be:

HSS5.000x0.375

and

HSS4,500x0.375

The terminolgy 'strong, extra strong, etc.' applies to Grade A53 steel (which is 35 ksi yield), which is the old standard pipe designation (schedule 40/80 pipe).

you might ask the designer if 50ksi is really what was he meant when he wrote the specs or if HD is suitable. I am having trouble determining why it would be necessary for a fence post to be such high strength.

I don't think A500 Gr. C (with 50 ksi yield) is available for rounds. It's available for square and rectangular.

The A500 Gr. C for rounds is 46 ksi.

Why don't you post an RFI to the designer clarifying what is required? Oh yeah, you probably don't want your competition to be aware of the discrepancy that the designer has created...

A500 GR C for round HSS has a 46 ksi yield. A618 and A847 Gr 50 have 50 ksi yield.
