I am trying to find a nailing pattern for my 5ply 2x6 built-up wood column. According to NDS 15.3.3.1 b) all nails have to penetrate all my laminations and at least 3/4 of my outermost lamination. For my 5ply wood column the nail should have a length of at least 7.125" but the maximum size of a common nail, 60D, is 6in. Should I use bolts to attach my plies together? I heard is an expensive option. Should I use a stronger species thus reducing my number of plies? What would be the best option for my case?

Thanks,

Simpson makes 1/4 x 8" SDS screws that might be useable if you added an extra 1/2" to the column width...

Thank you all for your replies.

Celt83,

If I may ask, what nailing pattern do you use to attach the 4ply gang post?

Thanks,
