Can anyone refer me to the API Spec containing either the relevant calculations or tables showing the joint strength of the various API tool joint threads. I found a table in a string book that I have but it only goes up to 4 1/2".

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks. I think that it is in API RP 7G, but I don't have it here so I'm just going on other info.

denade,

The spec you want is API 5C3. This specification has the formulas for the various thread strength.

From the table of contents under Joint Strength:
Round thread casing
buttress thread casing
extreme line casing
tubing joint
line pipe joint

If you are in the Houston Texas area, Brown Book store usually has API RP7G specification in stock. It's very pricy!
The simpliest way to calculate the joint strength of any pin rotary shoulder connection is as follows: If the pin relief groove is used calculate the cross sectional area, from the relief groove dia min to the ID max times the material min yield, this will be the joint strength max with no safety. If the relief groove is not used, calculate the area at the pitch dia. of the pin thread.
for box threads, calculate the area from the last thread of engegement of the box thread with the small end of the pin thread, to the OD min. If a box bore back is used, calculate from the ID max of the bore back to the OD min.
This will give you a close number to work with. Remember these numbers will be quite a bit larger than joint strength of drill pipe, as shown in the 7G spec. But the 7G spec. does cover connection strength in more detail than I described above. I hope this helps.
