I have a 6-lead motor on an older lathe. The motor has a 6-pole termial block labeled UVW & XYZ however the wires have been removed from the block and are not labeled. Is there any way to determine which wire is which? The motor has three leads coming out of a small hole at the top of the pecker head and three coming from a hole at the bottom.
The control panel is set up for a 2-speed configuration; one 3-pole contactor for low speed and one larger 3-pole contactor and a shunt contactor wired in unison for high speed. I just need to identify the wires exiting the motor.

It sounds like a single speed, star/delta start motor.

The markings "UVW & XYZ" imply three seperate windings. This would be a European, two voltage (wye/delta) motor.
If there is continuity between all six leads then there are two possibilities.
1:> The motor is, as you say, a two winding motor and the UVW, XYZ markings are misleading. Identifying the leads is more difficult.
2:> The motor is burned out.

Try with the following tips.

1. Identify the leads with the continuity.
2. You can do the flicker test(like how you check the polarity of the CTs between primary and secondary) between two windings and based on the uniformity you can identify the sequence.
