Hello,
I was recently working on a part which is made from a sharp corner angle, 1.250" x 1.250" x .125" thick. The material is required to be 6063-T5. Unfortunately, we cannot find this material in this temper, as the only temper available for 6063 angles is -T52. I know that -T52 is solution heat treated, aged, then stress relieved through compression. Why would a 6063 angle only be available after stress relief through compression? Does the chemistry of this alloy after extrusion make residual stresses so high that distortion requires stress relief?
Also, why is this alloy only stress relieved via compression instead of 6061 alloys which are commonly stress relieved through stretching?
