We make hydraulic press machines. We are making a cylinder having a diameter of 1100 mm. The piston size is 800 mm. Length of stroke is 150 mm. The maximum pressure we want to exert is 300 kg/cm2. The chemical composition of the steel which we getting is:

C: .75% Cr: 1.3% Ni: .32% Mo: .18%

Will this material be safe since the carbon content if relatively high? Is there any risk in using it as a high pressure cylinder? Will the material be machinable and easily drill-able?

Please help...

Are you sure about the 0.75%C? That would seem very high for this application (pressure) and risky in terms of ductility and notch toughness. I would consider a low alloy steel, pressure vessel quality.

Or even 0.45% C with the correct Q&T process.
Your chem looks sort of like a 6200/6300 grade, but not really.
What spec are you buying this material to?
What is the heat treatment? Properties?
And what wall thickness?
4300psi isn't too high, but at 1.1m diameter you are looking at +3" walls
I agree, not 0.75% C, that is risky.

I would recommend one of the seamless pipe grades or forged and bored pipe for pressure retaining capability as in a cylinder;

SA 106 Gr C
SA 369 FPB or FP2
SA 335 Grade P2

I agree with all the above comments. My own choice will be EN24 steel. A 0.75%C a Big NO NO

Thank you very much everybody for you valuable help. I have rejected the material and am going for forged En 24 shaft. Even I thought that the high carbon content will make the material brittle.

Thanks once again..
