In sheet metal we need to start with a base TAB feature.
Is TAB an acronym for something?
If not, then why is it called that?

I suspect that this term, a 'tab', is being used because when working in sheet metal adding 'tabs' to something, that is an extra feature that is often, but not always, at some angle and less than the length of the piece that it's attached to, like below:
