Hi,

How to find the A.No for E8018 C1 H4R ? I am looking in SFA-5.4 but dont seem to find it.

Go to ASME IX Table QW442, match the composition of the rod or the deposited composition to the Table. Review QW404.5 first. Keep in mind, that these aren't exact compositions, but are "families" of similar filler metals. Not all filler metals will correspond to an A No.
 
How to determine the preheating and post weld heat treatment necessary for E8018 C1 ? The base metals being SA612(head) and SA105(coupling)....

Also, how to determine what kind of Non destructive examination is needed ?

Pls. bear with the amateur questions.

You are learning the same way I learned, except, there was no forum to turn to when the process started and no one around for guidance. Most of my "support" was of the here it is, figure it out type. 40 years later I'm still figuring. Your NDT should come from your construction code or be passed down from the owner of the plant you are building for. I'm assuming that you are looking at production of the component as opposed to NDT of the qualification test which can be found in Sec. IX, QW1XX. I come from a castings background, in some cases the material spec. establishes a minimum preheat and PWHT. Many times PWHT rules that over ride the material spec. are found in the construction code. That is where I would start. Your Section IX WPS is only the beginning and really should address any additional variables imposed in the construction code.

While looking up temperatures,should I look up base metal or filler metal's preheating and PWHT temperatures ?

My questions are regarding a repair to be done to a MC331 pressure vessel.

Look at your base metal information, that is what the need for preheat, interpass and PWHT derives from. Most of the time the weld will pretty much take care of itself provided filler selection is correct and the welder knows what he is doing. It is the effect of the process on the base metal and heat affected zone that is of the most concern. In addition to the references I mentioned earlier, get yourself a copy of the AWS Welding Handbook and the ASM Welding, Brazing and Soldering Handbook. When other sources fail to give you the information you need, these publications will usually get you in the ballpark based on both the science behind welding and the practical experience of people finding out that science isn't always 100% correct. Knowing where to look is more important than just knowing it, memory fails at times, trust me on that. I tend to believe anything relating to metallurgy is 50% science and 50% black magic, or so it seems at times. As for 40+ years, most days I wonder what I was thinking way back when, even though it has been an interesting journey.
