I need to replace some wear bars on a small wheel loader bucket and have some A2 and 1045 on hand. Which one will give me the best wear against concrete and sand? I have found some comparisons amongst various tool steels, but nothing to compare 10xx vs. tool steel.

Thanks, ISZ.

For any abrasion related application tool steels are always better due to the presence of complex carbides in the matrix. In 1045 steel, you could have a pearlitic or martensitic matrix which is not enough to resit wear. However, 1045 material is cheap and abundantly available.. While there can be a few restrictions in processing tool steels.

A2 will have better wear resistance than 1045. Quench and temper to 58-62 HRC.

Thanks for the responses. A2 was my guess but it pays to ask!

If you are contemplating welding the wear bars to the bucket, the 1045 might a better choice. You would need to localize harden the wear areas, either with induction hardening or flame hardening, then use proper preheat/postheat for the welding.

The bucket originally had a 4" cutting edge that has been worn down about 2" already. I am purchasing a new weld-on cutting edge to fix that.

The other area of concern is two pieces of 1/2" x 2" steel running front to back. They are almost worn through in the "heel" area. I would use AR400 if I was going to buy the metal...but in this case I am only trying to use what metal I have on hand to make this bucket last a little longer. The area around the quick attach mounting has cracked out once already and I suspect it will fail again before wear becomes an issue again.
