Ref. earlier discussed question:
Can A333 always be used to replace A106?

I have almost the same question:
Does steel A333 Grade 6 always satisfy the requirements for A106 Grade B?

We do all testing for our products on A106 Grade B pipes and with this assume that results with A333 Gr. 6 will be equivalent or better. A client has questined this aproach, and we need to come up with a good explanation.

We have bought copies of both standards, and they are indeed very similar. Only real difference is impact testing. I have also bought ASTM A530 which is reffered to in A106 and ASTM A999 which is reffered to in A333.

For almost all requirements I find Gr. 6 to have clearly stated equal or stricter requirements than Gr. B.

The only kind of vague area is that Gr. B requires bending test, which is not required for Gr. 6, but Gr. 6 requires flattening test. I understand flattening test is considered a stricter test than bending test, to prove sufficient ductility, so I guess it can be argumented that Gr. 6 also in this area has a stricter requirement.

I cannot find any requirements in the above mentioned standards about grain size that was a concern for stanweld in refferenced thread... It may be that Gr. 6 usually has smaller grain size, but regardless of grain size it should still be accepted as Gr. B, since no requirements are given.

Anyway, after studying the standards, I feel pretty safe to state that a pipe according to A333 Grade 6 will always pass the tests required to be certified as A106 Grade B.

Any oppinions to this? :) Am I on thin ice here?

The mechanical properties are essentially identical. The significant difference is that A333 Gr6 is generally preferred for low temperature service applications.

Material selection will be dependant upon the application, service temperature, etc....
