ABAQUS/CFD 1

Hey @all,

I'm trying to take an approach to simulation with ABAQUS and I'm a little bit confused concerning ABAQUS'S CFD application.
Is it part of the standard installation or does it need to be installed as an additional tool / add-in / etc. ?

From what I can see, there's only one dedicated GUI in ABAQUS which is CAE. (Also CAE stands for "Complete Abaqus Environment", so that should have some weight..) But I don't understand how to perform CFD analysis with this.

Some older Tutorials found on Youtube show this wasn't a problem in earlier releases.

Maybe someone here can help me with this confusion..

CFD is not available in Abaqus/CAE since 2017 release. Older versions include "With CFD Model" option in the Start Session window shown after Abaqus/CAE is started. Older versions still allow you to install CFD solver but it’s not supported in Abaqus/CAE anymore. That’s because traditional CFD functionalities were moved to 3DExperience platform (Simulia also offers two programs using Lattice-Boltzmann method).

Is access to 3DExperience platform included in the ABAQUS License? And how does the 3DExp-platform tie in with the ABAQUS/CAE-platform? Like, how can I couple an existing ABAQUS/CAE FE-Simulation with an CFD Simulation? And do you, by chance, know why DESSAULT chose to do it this way? At first glance, it seems a bit counter-intiutive to move some parts to the 3DExperience platform, while still maintaining the CAE program?

Sorry, for the lots of question. I do find all of the Dessault Systems Offers to be rather intransparant. For example you can still find a section about ABAQUS/CFD on their Webpage. Yet, to me, at first this seems to be like a new kind kind of GUI provided the notion of ABAQUS/... defines destinctive applications. With your comment in mind and with a lot of imagination I could see that CFD is wrapped into this 3DExp-platform, although on this page it is referred to as ABAQUS Unified FEA (which seems to be same as 3DExperience...not really sure on that one either).

Unfortunately 3DExperience requires separate license. Dassault wants to create a comprehensive platform combining simulations with CAD, collaborative functions and other capabilities of their previous software. Some functionalities of 3DExperience platform are available via web browser while others require installation. You can perform some analyses directly on the platform (i.e. structural FEA, CFD) while others (i.e. acoustics, MBD) still require access to regular simulation software installed on your machine. In the latter case you can only upload and view results on the platform.

If you want to perform FSI analysis, you will have to couple CFD and structural software (for example XFlow and Abaqus co-simulation).

thanks for the clarification. This has been very helpful. I'll look into this and see which academic licenses there are available.
Just out of curiosity: If you'd have a pre-existing ABAQUS-FE-Simulation, which you would then expand to FSI analysis, which would be your CFD-application of choice to perform said task?
 
Personally I would use XFlow. It’s very user-ffiendly, has large capabilities (especially for free surface and multiphase flow) and can be easily connected with Abaqus. But the choice of software depends on what you want to simulate, of course.
 
The task at hand would be to take the pre-existing (ABAQUS) FE-Simulation, which describes the process of ortogonal cutting, with chip segmentation etc. and to simulate a special kind of lubrication mechanism with a cfd simulation. Multiphase flow would come in handy. I've just read that XFlow has a built-in Radiation Monte Carlo model as well. So this is definitely worth to look into. Thank you very much!
