Hi.

I have 2 components connected with a cohesive layer in between. The cohesive layer is modelled in one of the parts, using of a cell partition. The cohesive layer has a tie constraint with the other part.
I want to had a contact interaction between the two components, to prevent penetration when the cohesive disappears.

I am able to isolate the partition surface, however I can not select it as a slave surface in an interaction. Do I have to model the adhesive as a different part?

Thanks for your help

It seems that you are using surface-based cohesive behavior, not cohesive elements. In such a case, standard contact behavior will automatically occur between the parts once the cohesive interface fails.

I partitioned the part, added a cohesive section and COH3D8 elements in the mesh.

When cohesive elements are used, you should define contact between the parts. It's easiest with general contact in Explicit. Check the documentation chapter "Modeling with Cohesive Elements", paragraph "Defining Contact between Surrounding Components".

Yeah I understand that.

I might have not made myself clear. I wanted to know if it possible to create a contact interaction between an exterior face of a part and an interior surface (created by a partition) of another part

It would be best to see your model but I think that the problem with selection is as you said, caused by the fact that you need a separate part for the cohesive layer. Align it with parts being connected and edit the coordinates of the nodes in the cohesive layer to make them lie along the interface.

Sorry to bother again.

I created a new part which is the cohesive layer. I constrained (tie) it the other 2 parts. However, Abaqus isn't able to solve the first increment (two severe discontinuity iterations in each cutback). Any idea what could be wrong?

Try editing the coordinates of the nodes of this additional part to make them lie along the interface, as I’ve mentioned before.
