Hello,

I have been working with ABAQUS for some time now but I am just learning how to use contact pairs and performing dynamic analysis using Explicit. I have reviewed example problems and have been able to run them on my server.

However, I am trying to have a rigit sphere contact the edge of a steel. I can perform it statically by specifying a displacement of the ball. The steel plate deforms appropriately. Therefore, I assume my contact pairs are working fine. But when I try and specify an initial velocity and specify my contact pairs within the step (*Dynamic, Explicit), I get an error message on the log file and no error messages on the DAT file. Since there is no error message on the dat file or the msg file, I do not know what I am doing wrong. The error message is as follows. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Run C:\abaqus\6.4-2SE\exec\package.exe

Ok, I guess I know a little bit on what is going on with some help. However, in my dynamic analysis, only the two nodes that are in contact with the ball will displace. The rest of the nodes will not. And then the nodes appear to stick to the surface that they came in contact with as the ball bounces back.

In my static analysis, the entire plate will bend (i.e. all the nodes will displace except for the boundary conditions) and the nodes that contact do not stick. It is really odd to me and my co-workers. Any help would be appreciated.

Problem solved. Density issue with the steel. I apologize for those who read this, I am an amature with Explicit.

However, if anyone could answer this question, it would be benefical. With a working dynamic analysis, I have to be able to run a static analysis afterwards. If this does not work, then I should just continue with ABAQUS/Standard. My quesion is, Can I run a static analysis after a dynamic/explicit analysis. Of course I tried, and get the following error message.

***ERROR: PREVIOUS STEPS INDICATE THAT THE *STATIC CARD SHOULD USE SOLVER=ITERATIVE

And referring the manual, solver=iterative is not an option and solver=ddm does not work either. According to what I read, I don't think you can run the static analysis after a dynamic analysis. If anyone knows this, please advise.

Thank you

I think you have to use *IMPORT in a new analysis - see the section in the ABAQUS manual about transferring results from Explicit to Standard (section 7.7.1 onwards)
