Hello Everyone,

I've been familiarizing myself with the Sensors Option which can be used via user-subroutine (VUAMP) in Abaqus. Goal of my project is to install sensors on group of nodes ( say 500) and monitor the displacement variable. But I learned that "The sensor name specified in the history output definition, and one and only one nodal output or element output request can be specified for each sensor definition. Since the named sensor must point to a unique real number at a given time, the NODE SET OR ELEMENT SET USED IN THE DEFINITION MUST CONTAIN ONLY ONE MEMBER". Because of this constraint that the nodal set has to have only one member, I was wondering how to define my nodal set (which has around 500 members in it) in the history output request of the input file. I sincerely appreciate any related discussion or information regarding the SENSORS/ HISTORY OUTPUT DEFINITION FOR NODE SET (WHICH HAS MORE THAN ONE MEMBER IN IT).

I greatly value your information and time!

Can you talk about the application? What are you trying to accomplish? Why do you need so many sensors? Can you not get away with a few?

Hi, Thanks for the response.
I'm currently working on a medical device (stent) modeling and focusing on the behavior of different solution variables (U,V, acc) using Abaqus. As a part of the optimization process, we wanted to test out how some of the selected nodes are being displaced with time due to various boundary conditions that's being imposed on it. As a part of the project, I had to track the changes in the displacements by installing sensors over it. The total number nodes in this specific problem are as many as 7000 (nearly) and we could cut down to 500 of the most useful node locations. But I learnt that specifying the sensors for 500 different nodes is not straightforward as Abaqus holds a constraint that the nodal set related to a named sensor has to have only one member.

I was hoping if there is any way to assign sensors on nodes as many as 500!

I appreciate any ideas/suggestion on this.

Before a fruitful recommendation can even be made, time must be spent on understanding the problem. So, let me make sure I understand what you are trying to accomplish.

Are you trying to optimize the geometric design (shape) of a stent that is undergoing deformation due to a set of imposed BCs/loads? Also, I am not sure why you need to sense the kinematics of so many nodes.

It sounds like you trying to do something like the Shape Optimization that Tosca has.

That is precisely what it is beginning to sound like to me which makes me wonder why the OP is trying to reinvent the wheel. There are many topology/shape optimization tools out there including the one mentioned above.

Hello Guys, Sorry for my delayed response and let me elaborate my problem statement and why I need many sensors.

We work on creating a personalized 3D cloud-based computational models of the vasculature for visualization and anatomical measurements. Simulating the deployment of stent (i.e., stent delivery and placement)is one of our primary goals. We simulate everything using our in-house simulators and quite a lot of help from abaqus as well. Here comes my work, wherein I need to optimize the stent deployment scenario and in order to do this, I plan on utilizing the sensors option in Abaqus and develop new algorithm based on the displacement values (which I plan to monitor using sensors). Our models are pretty huge and involve thousands of nodes.

That's the reason I'm looking for an option that makes it easy to specify hundreds of nodes in the input. Hope I have conveyed my problem statement better this time.

I sincerely appreciate any input on sensors specification in Abaqus input file!
Thanks in advance for your time!
