ABB Circuit Shield Relay Replacement? 1

I'm wondering if anyone can suggest a digital overcurrent relay that would fit in the cut-out opening for an old ABB (BBC) (I-T-E) Circuit Shield relay? Hoping I can recommend a straightforward upgrade with need for cutting or enlarging existing opening. Power supply would be (ideally) 125 V dc. Cutout is about 6.6 inches wide by 3.7 inches high.

Thanks,

Dave

As I recall from a prior life, that cutout was unique to those relays, and smaller than anything else I was aware of so relay plus filler plate wouldn't even work. If you have multiple relays side by side you might be able to cut just the spaces between and sneak in a 2RU relay, but mostly you're stuck.

I doubt you'll find anything exact - I looked for am upcoming project with the same task. We've decided on a SEL-751, with SEL adaptor plates. The other thing to consider is that the Circuit Shield was a draw out relay. Remove the relay and use standard leads to test. If you are changing to any kind of newer relay, it really should have a FT or similar test switch. That becomes the justification to cut a big hole and use a SEL 700 series adaptor plate with FT switch in the plate. The plates are about $40.

You may also consider ordering a new door for the switchgear. Have everything installed, set & tested on the door prior to the outage. 15-20 wires to connect during the outage + testing AC & I/O circuits. The doors are not as expensive as you may think. If you have a switchgear / panel builder in the area, have them come out and take measurements.

Thanks for the replies. I looked into this a few years ago and didn't find a replacement that could fit the cutout. I guess the situation hasn't changed.

Stay safe.

Dave
