What are the points that should be considered to design foundation for a 3 storied building when there is a water body(pond) near one side of the building. The water body is at a distance of less than 3m from the boundary of the building. Would a retaining wall be sufficient to protect the foundation? If yes, what should be the depth of the retaining wall with respect to foundation depth?

Thanks in advance.

Depth of ground water at the building since it affects bearing capacity. You get this from the usual soils investigation work.

eps1lon,

You should delete the thread posted on the structural engineering forum, if you wish to start anew. I agree that this forum is a more proper place for your concerns.

@retired13

Thanks for your suggestion. I just deleted my previous thread as this forum seems more appropriate.
