ABS Plastic Pipes - Application

Hello,

I want to experiment with ABS plastic in automotive underbonnet applications.
Ambient pressure, air medium with temperatures expected to be about 100 deg C.

Will ABS maintain its shape and rigidity at these temps?
Such as ABS used in sewage and water works?

PVC and UPVC is a complete no no so far, found out the hard way.

Anyone?

From Perry's ChemE Handbook, 100 C is at or above the maximum use (no-load) temperature for different grades of ABS. The general purpose grade has a limit of 70-90 C, a heat-resistant grade has a range 90-110 C.

PP has a slightly higher limit 105-150 C,
CPVC has limit 110 C,
Polycarbonate has limit 120 C,
and nylons have various limits.

Of course, epoxies, glass-filled polyester, phenolics have higher limits and rigity.
 
For your application, I think there is useful information in the chapter 'Plastics' and also the section on Plastic Pipe in Machinery's Handbook.

I am going to try ABs or PP which ever is cheaper. If I can find it locally.

Machinery's Handbook, published by Industrial Press, New York. My copy is 25th Edn. (1996), ISBN 0-8311-2595-0, Library of Congress no. TJ 151.0245, Dewey Decimal no. 621.8'0212. There are usually copies for sale on eBay & Half.com. Newer editions are available, but $100+.
A very good reference on materials & physical properties, fasteners, machining, mechanical engineering for non-MechE majors, etc.
