I was wondering how I could use an accelerometer to measure tilt and linear acceleration and how to distinguish between the two? (tilt would be in two axes: forward/backward and left/right, and acceleration would be in one axis: forward/backward) I saw a post about using two sensors at 45 and 135 degrees to the horizontal, but wasn't clear on how to do this. Any ideas?

Take a look in Analog Devices web site. They feature a dual axis accelerometer that is mainly used as a tilt meter. They also explain how it is used to make a tiltmeter, formulas.
